MEXICO CITY — An area Indigenous chief and his son died in a gunfight with land invaders who tried to run them off their land close to Nicaragua’s northern Caribbean coast, an environmental group mentioned Monday.

Tránsito Melgara, a frontrunner in Sukatpin, a Miskito group within the Twi Waupasa territory, and his son Terlin Melgara, had been killed Saturday, mentioned environmentalist Amaru Ruiz, director of the Del Río Basis.

Ruíz alleged the combat was initiated by Gilberto and David Castro, a father and son who he mentioned additionally died within the incident.

Nicaragua’s Nationwide Police had not touch upon the assault.

Ruíz mentioned at the very least 3,000 Indigenous individuals have been compelled off their land in Nicaragua by invaders since 2015.

Salomón López Smith, a frontrunner of the Mayangna Indigenous group, was killed in March.

A number of assaults in 2021 killed dozens of Miskito and Mayangna individuals round Bosawas, a protected space farther west. The reserve has been hit by unlawful mining and logging.

Indigenous activists say the federal government of President Daniel Ortega has not accomplished sufficient to deal with the issues within the jungled area, one thing his administration denied.
